First 100% solar powered resort on the Great Barrier Reef

Located in the turquoise waters of the Whitsundays,
Elysian Retreat isn't just another beautiful island resort
– it's the Great Barrier Reef’s first resort to be 100
percent powered by the sun's energy.
The Sojourn Retreats group have spent the last year
renovating the cyclone devastated Paradise Bay Eco
Resort, after purchasing it in March last year.
To Charlton and the team at Elysian it is an
accomplishment they have all been dreaming of.
Following in the footsteps of Pumpkin Island, Australia’s
first beyond carbon neutral island, Elysian continues to
set the trend for sustainable tourism. Impressively the
island will operate off the grid, powered by the sun and
minimise it's environmental footprint by reducing
waste, saving and improving usage of water, power,
fuel and emissions. The switch to solar power saves an
estimated 39,420 litres of diesel per year plus the
additional fuel used to transport diesel to the island via
barge. This translates to 112 tonnes of carbon
emissions for the fuel alone, excluding the transport of
the fuel, which could easily need four 14 tonnes
barges.
The excitement of an eco-lux resort run purely on
battery and solar power with clean, quiet, sustainable
energy proves that luxuries need not be sacrificed in
the search for sustainability.
The team at Green Energy Technologies in Airlie Beach
along with Ash and his team from Ash Electrical
Whitsundays completed the power installation this past
week which runs the entire resort, including the infinity
magnesium pool, aircondioned spa, restaurant, bar,
staff accommodation, shed and the 10 guest villas all
complete with airconditioning, TV's, mini bar fridges
and coffee machines.
